Bashful is a medium small red tomato – mostly between 3 – 4 ounces, nearly globe shaped, smooth.  Lots of seeds, firm walls (orange red, not dark red – perhaps from its heritage), flavor fair, 6.5 out of 10.  The plant yields heavily, but appears prone to disease.  The plant was dead by July 20.

Plenty of seed saved on July 16.

Germinated on March 31 (5 days) - 1 seedling out of 3 seeds planted.  No additional seedlings as of April 17.

Transplanted to 4 inch pot April 17

Transplanted to 5 gallon pot May 14

Possible interesting outcomes in the F2 and beyond:  (all Dwarf plants, rugose foliage)

Large yellow round fruit

Large orange round fruit

Large Heart shaped yellow fruit

Large Heart shaped orange fruit

Medium sized heart shaped yellow fruit

Medium sized heart shaped orange fruit

(the heart shaped parents and yellow/orange cross make this one particularly interesting)

Flowers of Sleazy and Sungold, side by side

Note:  I have 2 Sleazy plants growing, one in the ground and one in a 10 gallon pot.

The pictures I’ve posted have all been of Sleazy “A”. Sleazy “B” is smaller and not as robust as “A”. At first I thought it was because it’s in a pot but now I’m beginning to have doubts. The leaves on the two plants are different although still pretty similar. The flowers on “B” are smaller (about half the size) and the tomatoes are a little smaller and smooth, without the ribbing seen on “A”.

When pollinating the flowers on Carbon I was using pollen from both Improved Dwarf Champion and New Big Dwarf to create two different crosses. The flowers were bagged but it’s possible I created this cross with pollen from both. We’ll have to see how the ripe tomatoes compare. This could work out well in that we’ll now have two different crosses to work with. My NBD crosses didn’t set fruit.
